My visit to St. Augustine Church last Sunday was definitely a nice change of scenery/pace compared to my routine Catholic masses. The overall atmosphere was open and inviting with a strong sense of spiritual freedom. Towards the end of mass Councilwoman Cynthia Willard Lewis said something along the lines of, "Sundays are the most segregated days in this city, but not at St. Aug's!" Naturally, she was very theatrical, but what she said held enormous truth. There was no color line present, just New Orleanians singing and praying among one another in celebration of their faith.

My visit to St. Augustine Church was surprisingly interesting. In high school, i was required to attend Mass and I found their Mass's extremely boring. At this Church I noticed some similarities with a regular Catholic Mass but there were many different "rituals". The congregation sang the "Lords Prayer" and held hands while doing it to. The overall atmosphere was very friendly and welcoming (unlike the high school masses). When it was time to show a sign of peace, i shook hands with just about everyone in the church. In a regular Mass, people usually shake hands to people closest to them. This is the only Catholic Mass I have ever enjoyed.

So what do you think makes St. Augustine's so different?

I went to St. Augustine Church about 2 weeks ago. I wasn't really expecting much, so I was surprised when I actually enjoyed the Sunday mass. The atmosphere was very warm and welcome, which I cannot say about the church I go back at home. They never held hands and hardly sang at my church, while St. Augustine was full of life and everyone held hands. The music was also pretty good too. I noticed a lot of smiling which I usually never see at mass. If I was a regular church attendee I would want to go to a church like that.
